We excluded the moor sheep from the wood and were delighted to discover a whole new range of wild flowers, including quite rare and beautiful ones. Botanists will want to come and see for themselves, particularly in the spring and summer months. In addition, 7 acres of wildflower meadows have been created and approximately 15 acres of wetlands are being managed and conserved.

The area is rich in bird life, including grouse, pheasant, partridge, snipe, curlew and woodcock. Herons are often seen in Commondale Beck fishing for trout and eels. Bird boxes are positioned in the woodland to encourage breeding of blue tits. Recent visitors collected a list of 36 different bird species

There are lots of rabbits, grey squirrels, some foxes and small deer. Wetland areas provide a habitat for toads as well as benefiting over-wintering and breeding birds including wild duck. Dry stone walls provide habitats for small animal species, including adders and grass snakes as well as limiting sheep access from the moor.

Footpath access to the farmland has been extended to give our visitors the opportunity to come together to enjoy both indoor and outdoor country pursuits.
